Sumy branch of Kharkiv National University of Internal Affairs began its activities in 1995 as a part-time study department of the University of Internal Affairs in Sumy.

The part-time study department in Sumy was a structural unit of the University of Internal Affairs for the training of specialists in the specialty 7.060101 "Jurisprudence" with the awarding of a lawyer's qualification to graduates.

In September 1995, the first 56 trainees began studying in the first course of the part-time education under the state order (investigative and forensic specialization).

Under the order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 173-Р of 06.05.2001, Sumy branch of National University of Internal Affairs was established on the basis of the part-time study department. According to the order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine dated June 19, 2001 No. 465 "On measures to improve the structure of the National University of Internal Affairs and other higher education institutions" and the order of the rector of the National University of Internal Affairs dated July 4, 2001 No. 792 "On organizational and staff issues" the recruitment of students for full-time study on a paid basis for the first course in the amount of 100 people was carried out for the first time.

To date, the Sumy branch of the KhNUIA carries out its educational activities at the first (bachelor's) and second (master's) levels of higher education in specialties 081 "Law" and 262 "Law enforcement activities". In 2019, the first recruitment of cadets was organized.

For twenty-seven years of activity, a powerful educational and material base was created, significant experience in organizing and ensuring the educational process was accumulated, a qualified team of scientists and practicing teachers was formed, ready for constant communication, exchange of experience and cooperation, the latest learning technologies were developed and implemented in practical activities.

In 2018, the Sumy Center of Primary Vocational Training "Police Academy" became a part of the Branch, which carries out educational activities in specialty 5162 "Police officer(by specializations)".

Today, the Branch employs 44 scientific and pedagogical workers, among them 21 candidates of sciences, associate professors and 4 doctors of sciences, professors, and 17 pedagogical workers.

Training of specialists is carried out by three departments:

1. Department of Legal Disciplines.

2. Department of Socio-Economic Disciplines.

3. Department of Humanitarian Disciplines.

The scientific and pedagogical staff and students of higher education of the university constantly take an active part in various scientific, scientific and practical conferences, seminars, panel discussions and other scientific events. The lecturers of the university are the authors of many textbooks, educational and methodical manuals, and scientific articles.

Students have the opportunity to graduate from the military department operating at Sumy State University.

Sumy Branch has a library with a total fund of more than 69,000 copies of educational and methodical literature. Students have the opportunity to use two reading rooms during their studies (one of them is on periodicals).

The meaningful cultural life of the Branch is based on the Student Self-Government, the Student Club, and a number of sports sections. The newspaper "Verum verbum" is published regularly.

Since 2004, a legal clinic has been operating on the basis of Sumy Branch of KhNUIA. Its activity is aimed at helping 2-4 year students acquire practical skills by providing legal assistance to low-income segments of the population. Teachers of the Department of Legal Disciplines are involved in the work of the legal clinic.
